Preserving Burns Memory

Burns memory is kept alive in many different ways.

Burns Clubs

There are many Burns organisations, not just in Scotland but all over the world, that meet regularly to appreciate the work of Robert Burns and help others to understand his poetry and beliefs.

The main celebration of the year is the annual Burns Supper held on the 25th of January. Traditionally this was an all male occasion and in some areas this still stands, but women are beginning to be allowed to join this celebration.

Our school remembers Robert Burns every year as we learn his poetry and hold a competition for each class to learn and recite Scottish poetry. The senior pupils hold a Burns Lunch and follow the procedure explained in "A Burns Supper". There is also a competition held to produce a front cover for the programme. About five drawings were chosen and used as the covers for the programme.

Monuments/Statues/Museums

Many of the houses Burns lived in still stand today and have been preserved as museums and information centres. There are also many monuments and statues of Robert Burns all over the world.

Royal Mail Stamps

In 1996 the Royal Mail issued a set of stamps to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Robert Burns.
